Atomic Superpark Dachstein, Austrias number 1 Glacier – Snowpark!
Dachstein is not a secret spot anymore, though it was something like this for the first few years. Like everything with value it took some time to grow – good things take a while! Austrian Snowboard Pro Bernd Mandlberger started to build the first obstacles on Dachstein Glacier in the summer of 2000. Since then the whole setup permanently grew and got bigger and better every year. Since 2006 The Borton Superparl is a Qpark, which means that it’s part of the biggest quality label for snowparks in the alps. The 2 main reasons for the extraordinaire quality of the park are the big know how and motivation of Bernd and his Qparks – crew and on the other hand the special weather that Dachstein – the easternmost glacier of the alps – has. It’s located to the north and stops all clouds from going through without emptying their snowloads onto the highest mountain of east Austria. There’s always way more snow than on the other austrian glaciers and also cooler weather. While other glaciers started to melt down with the global warming Dachstein stayed the same over the past few years!
A big point in the history of the Burton Superpark on Dachstein was the first SuperStarSession in June of 2003, which was the kickoff for a huge Marketingoffensive which made Dachstein as well known and loved for freeskiers and snowboarders as it’s now! The autumn of 2003 was also the date for the first Pleasure Jam to happen – the earlyseason scene – gathering that many people, no matter if pro or amateur, say it’s the best in the alps!
Though Dachstein has about 300 parkguests on the better days it never get’s “full” or stressy. That’s what’s so special there – the chilled and friendly Dachstein vibe that never changed over the years and makes people from all over the world come back every year. Some say it’s the stunning nature, some mean that it’s the supereasy way of travelling up and down the mountain, anyways: no angry “next!” – screams, snaking and yelling in the Burton Superpark!
The summerseason on Dachstein always starts in may and goes on to the end of july/beginning of august – concerning o the snowconditions. The autumnseason starts in october, as soon as the first bigger snowfalls hit Dachstein, and goes on till middle of december.
